Two Koreas

Unfortunately, Korea is divided into South&North Korea. Moreover, they have had conflict each other for more than 50 years. I, in fact, don't like DPRK because it has attacked S.Korea many times since Korean War. However, President Roh goes to DPRK on foot to meet Kim Jung-Il to improve relationship between both Korea. I think this effort is very innovative and splendor because this summit will establish the basic stone for unification of Korea. I hope this summit will cause good result.

Hamlet

If I were in Hamlet's position, then I would not do the same thing just as Hamlet did.

Hamlet was too emotional. Therefore, he cannot proceed the project that he wanted. Ophelia was dead, and even his mother died because Hamlet could not control his emotion.

I should be determined. Hamlet had a chance to success his revenge-kill his when his uncle prayed to the God. However, he didn't kill him because he thought that killing his uncle during pray or confession was worthless for revenge. In my case, I'll kill him for revenge.

Lastly, I should be more patience. Hamlet succeeded to revenge in the end, but he lost many people even himself because he wasn't patient and just did what he wanted or tried to do. However, I'll be more patient.

1. What is heavy metal music?
Which music do you like the most? R&B? Rap? My favorite music is heavy metal. Then what is the heavy metal music? Heavy metal music, which is also called the metal, is a kind of rock music. Its name was first used by music critic Sandy Pearlman in 1972. Heavy Metal music had been developed from blues-rock and psychedelic rock from 1968 to 1974. With these roots, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion and fast guitar solos(Wikipedia).
Heavy metal bands usually contain a drummer, a rhythm guitarist, a bassist, a lead guitarist, and a singer. In fact, singers in many metal bands take charge of both vocalists and instrumentalists. The lead guitars and the vocals determine the characteristics of metal band. The bass guitars are also important in heavy metal music because they provide low sound which makes music “heavy”.
Metal music consists of numerous numbers of subgroups. They are classified by speed of plays, the loudness of sounds, etc. There are subgroups such as Avantgarde metal, Black metal, Classic metal, Death metal, Doom metal, Folk metal, Glam metal, Gothic metal, Groove metal, Post-metal, Power metal, Progressive metal, Speed metal, Symphonic metal, Thrash metal, and Viking metal. Among these subgroups, I’ll explain about some important and famous genres.

2. Which music is metal music?
1) Black Metal
As you can guess from its name, “Black metal,” this genre has quite dark mood. It is extreme subgenre of metal. Black metal is recognized from other subgenres by an aggressive and raspy sound. The guitarists in black metal band play music in thick tone and use a lot of minor chord with highly distorted guitars. Guitar solos are used infrequently. Black metal has a distinct ‘rasped’ vocal style, a very guttural rasp or a high-pitched shriek one (Wikipedia). Some bands write lyrics which are inspired from the fantasy.
There are famous black metal bands such as Gorgoroth, Immortal, and Celtic Frost. Gorgoroth is notorious for their controversial anti-Christianity lyrics and the demonstration of corpsepaint. Their famous song is “electric wheel chair store.” Immortal is famous for their lyrics that describe imaginary kingdom called Blashyrkh. Immortal is also well-known for their song, “Pure Holocaust,” which depicts icy landscape. Celtic Frost is famous for their influence on the thrash metal, death metal, and black metal. “Rex Irae [Requiem]” is one of their famous songs that which makes them popular.

2) Death Metal
Death metal is one of the powerful and heaviest subgenres of heavy metal(Metal Hammer). Death metal is very similar to black metal, but there are some significant differences. Death metal concentrates more on death than black metal. Like black metal, death metal music consists of extremely fast drum patterns, powerful bass beats, and nihilistic lyrics. These death metal lyrics express more nihilistic theme than any other heavy metal subgenres except black metal. Melodies, and guitar solos are influenced by thrash metal.
Possessed, Napalm Death, and Morbid Angel are very famous death metal band in the world. Possessed is called the godfather of death metal because its debut album “Seven Churches” is regarded as the first death metal album. “Fallen Angel,” one of their famous songs, is very successful because of its rhythm. Napalm Death is famous for their experiment. They fused thrash metal and death metal and created a new genre called grindcore. Their representative song, “You Suffer,” is recorded in Guinness Book as the world’s shortest song. Morbid Angel is one of the first death metal bands to be overtly influenced by classical music(Wikipedia). “God of Emptiness,” one of their outstanding song, is the milestone of death metal that successes in public.

3) Progressive Metal
Progressive metal is influenced by jazz music, but progressive metal has few aspects in common with jazz music. Guitar-driven powerful sound and complex structure are characteristics of progressive metal. Classical and symphonic music influence the type of structure to progressive metal. It is one of media-successed metal genres. Some people confuse progressive metal and avantgarde metal; however, they are totally different. The experimentation of progressive metal lies mostly in playing complex rhythms and song structures with traditional instruments(Wikipedia). On the other hand, avantgarde metal uses unusual sound.
Sun caged, Circus Maximus, and Symphony X are representative progressive metal bands. Sun caged, which is very influential metal band, sings song called “Afraid to Fly.” Circus Maximus, the famous Norwegian band, sing a song named “Glory of the Empire.” Powerful progressive metal band Symphony X is well-known for their strong neo-classical structure. Their outstanding song is “The Divine Wings of Tragedy.”

4) Thrash Metal
Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music, one of the extreme metal subgenres, that is characterized by its high speed and aggression(metalandhorrormovie.com). Thrash metal is one of most commercial-successed. The genre features fast tempos, low-register, quick, complex guitar riffs, and high-register guitar solos(Lee). Some drummers in thrash metal band use two foot-pedaled drum called “double bass” in order to emphasize their aggression.
There are three outstanding thrash metal bands, Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeath. Metallica, which is accepted as a one of most successful metal group in the world are famous for their fast and aggressive sound and powerful vocal. Their famous song is “Master of Puppets.” This song is very famous because it criticizes drug addiction harshly and its guitar solo is extremely fast and powerful(Joongang). Megadeth, which is well-known for their dark mood, sing a song “Holy wars.” This song crticizes the ungenerous of religions(Robert). Slayer, a rival band of Metallica, is famous for “Angel of Death.” The song is determined as one of the representative song of thrash metal.

3. The influence of heavy metal music.
Heavy metal music, which is originated from rock music, influences a lot in the world. Its powerful sound and inconsistent rhythm influence punk rock. Heavy metal’s cynical lyrics can be seen in the lyrics of progressive rock. The fast and gorgeous guitar solo is adapted to speed rock, which is one of the fastest music genres. Heavy metal doesn’t simply influence other music genres but it also composes many fusion genres such as new metal, and rap metal(Although those genres have ‘metal’ in their name, they are not considered as subgenres of heavy metal music).
In society, at first heavy metal music was a controversial issue because its lyrics were very shocking and marvelous. The lyrics were too cynical and cruel for grown-ups. However, it became popular to teenagers and the young and heavy metal catalyzed young people think about social problems (e.g. wars, juvenile crimes).

4. Why do common people hate heavy metal music?
Heavy metal music, as I mentioned above, criticizes the present government or talks about social problems such as murder, terror, immorality, and so on. The music tries to change the world by concerning problems and suggesting solutions. However, most people in the world don’t like heavy metal music. Why do common people dislike heavy metal music? There are some reasons why they don’t like the music.
Firstly, the sound of heavy metal music is offensive to common people. Unlike many familiar genres such as R&B, country songs, and soft rock, sounds that made by distorted electric guitars and bass contain the metal. These sounds are very uncomfortable to listen. Distorted sounds are very unnatural sound and it is unfamiliar with people’s ears. Also, heavy metal doesn’t contain sequential rhythm that feels people comfortable. Instead of the rhythm, the metal consists of unpredictable, fast, and continuous rhythm.
Secondly, lyrics of heavy metal are too queer. Majority of pop songs are about bright things such as love, friendship, etc. In contrast, heavy metal songs talks about wars, drugs, the wrath of the poor and they even crticize fabrication of religion. Therefore, a lot of slangs or 4-letter words or unusal words are used in heavy metal. Sometimes, their lyrics imply very awful, strange things such as incest, consecutive murder, crucifying and so on. The lyrics make people feel unpleasant because lyrics itself are too radical.
Lastly, some of the heavy metal bands are too cynical. Heavy metal bands are significant from other music bands because of their criticism, but some times the criticism goes too far. For example, megadeth, an outstanding heavy metal band, is well-known for their criticism. They usually criticizes the US government, and wars. Even their name criticizes the massacre that was happened under the name of Christianity. It hurts a lot of Christians mind although megadeth doesn’t want to.
These are the reasons why many people don’t like heavy metal music. It has many extreme characteristics such as crticism, insulting lyrics and so on. They feel a lot of people feel even disgusting. However, heavy metal bands desire to change the world. They try to pinpoint current issues and suggest us solution. Do you want to change the world? Then just turn on your computer and search “Painkiller” by Judas Priest, which is the most tremendous metal song in the world and listen. You will feel something terrific!!

My favorite Proverb

My favorite proverb is “Late is better than never.” I like this proverb very much because it teaches me the way of life. It shows me that I shouldn’t give up something or be lazy. I keep this proverb in my mind and try my best to do mandatory things. With this proverb, I always work to achieve something although it takes long time or too late because late is better than never.

Advice for President Roh

If I am a advisor of President Roh, I’ll ask him to be more generous than now. He is quite an intelligent man, but his narrow mind disturb his working. So if he become more generous, then he could be a assiduous and believable president. Also, I want him to make less speaches. He talks too much words and most Koreans don’t trust him because it seems that he is not reliable. I think he can be a fine president by saying less words.

Most Unforgettable experience

More experienced I am, more I learned. I believe that this statement is absolutely true. So, I’ve experienced the number of events, and I’ve learned a lot. Among them, what I learned from is when I participated in KYPT. KYPT is one of the biggest physics competition in Korea, and it’s the 1st time I’ve participated. It’s the team contest, so teamwork is very important. I and my team members don’t have much time to practice, but we’ve tried very hard. Finally, we did our best. After that, we participate the Tournament. It was pretty tough. We had some conflicts in each other’s opinion, but overcame it. I learned an importance of friendhsip, and teamwork.
